Oh, so cutting foreskin off a baby boy is no big deal, right? It can prevent him from getting penile cancer, HIV and UTIs, right? Well…
Surgically removing the clitoral hood would actually reduce the risk of UTI. Have you ever changed a baby’s diaper? I’ve changed countless diapers of my 4 kids and I can tell you that it’s far easier to wipe an uncircumcised boy rather than an uncircumcised girl. Is that any reason to cut either of their genitals? Absolutely not! That’s a good reason to learn how to properly wipe a baby’s diaper area and subsequently teach them how to clean themselves as they grow older.
If it were true that not being circumcised causes increased risk of things like penile cancer, then we would see a marked increase in rates of those diseases in basically every European country, since routine circumcision is almost unheard of there. But we don’t see the numbers to back up such ridiculous claims, do we?
You know, people might get appendicitis later in life and require emergency surgery, or even die. Should we electively remove the appendix of all newborn babies? That would be absurd, wouldn’t it?
All this aside, it is absolutely not a parent’s choice to do something that will cause their child physical and psychological pain. That’s called “abuse”. This is not a “you live your life and let me live mine” issue. This is a human rights issue. Babies have just as many rights as everyone else. They have the right to be protected from physical harm. And if it takes other members of society standing up and screaming “this is wrong!”, then so be it. If it was considered normal to mutilate elderly people or disabled people or animals, wouldn’t you hope that the people who recognized it as wrong would stand up and shout “no!”?
Hmmm, this is kind of like how some people stood up and said things like “slavery is wrong” and “hitting your wife is wrong”, isn’t it?
